Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has been one of the most sought after cosmetic procedure  in the US. Lasers have been used in removing hair from the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and other areas of concern.

Benefits of laser hair removal include:

Precision: lasers can select and target dark, coarse hairs while leaving surrounding skin undamaged.
Speed: each pulse is delivered at fractions of a second, making the treatment light, easy and fast.
Predictability: most patients experience hair removal within 3 to 7 sessions.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The dynamic of laser hair removal technology is the delivery of highly concentrated light into the hair follicles. The pigment in the hair follicles absorbs the light and destroys the hair. Effective hair reduction is only effective during the active growth phase. Permanent hair reduction is considered permanent only when a significant amount of hair does not return for a period of time longer than the complete growth cycle. Following a series of treatments most hair is permanently removed.

Permanent hair reduction can be achieved by light based technology including laser hair removal or hair removal with Broad BandLight (BBL)
BBL technology is also referred to as: Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology. At My Petite Medispa we employ the state of the art Sciton BBL technology. IPL or BBL uses intelligent technology to selectively destroy them while rendering the surrounding tissue (skin) intact. The core purpose of BBL hair removal technology is to remove unwanted hair from the body.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETween BBL/ipl and laser hair removal?

BBL or (IPL) is a wide or broad band light that emits energy in sequential and consistent matter. This energy is emitted in carefully timed pulses. Laser hair removal technology is light that is emitted in a sudden burst of energy. BBL hair removal is therefore a much more comfortable procedure than laser hair removal. As a result, this makes BBL the most opted choice for hair removal.

The Innovative BBL technology offers unique lash lamp technology. This works via interchangeable Smart Filters along with thermoelectric cooling. It features Finesse Adapters for those hard to reach areas. This produces an even result. Hair removal has never been this precise.

BBL technology is also used in facial rejuvenation. Learn more…

Just How Does BBL Hair Removal Technology Work?

Precise and selective intense light pulses are directed at the hair follicle. The light is absorbed by the hair follicle and is converted to heat. The heat loosens the hair follicle and disrupts the cells responsible for growing the hair.

BBL/IPL employs integrated thermoelectric monitoring assembly. This enables its sapphire crystal and sensors ti continually and precisely maintain temperatures ranging from 0 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius with adjustability of every degree in between. Thus, this makes traditional laser hair removal a secondary option. Therefore, BBL hair removal is far more advanced and a less painful option.

Permanent Hair Removal Q&A

Q: Is laser hair removal permanent?
A: Laser hair removal or BBL hair removal is considered permanent. Once the hair follicle is killed, it can no longer grow. BBL hair removal is the it choice for permanent solutions. It uses smart filters with a flexible range of wavelengths, ranging from 590, 640 and 695. With a fairly large spot size, rapid repetition, and constant cooling the most efficient treatment is achieved. This is the latest in permanent hair removal. No hair can be missed in the process.

Although this treatment has been on the marked for a long time, BBL’s arrival marks a tremendous upgrade.Once the hair follicle has been destroyed it will no longer come back.

Q: Will hair ever grow back after removal?
A: The hair that in in the active growing phase when the hair laser removal or BBL hair removal treatment is done is killed and will not return. However, new hair growth may occur from follicles that were not in the active growing phase at the time the treatment was delivered. This is the reason why 6-8 sessions are recommended to achieve the hair reduction the patient desires.

Q: Are hairs that pop out during laser hair removal permanently gone?
The hairs that pop out from the skin after the laser hair removal treatment are an indication of the hair follicles that have been killed. As a result and generally these do not come back.

Q: What happens to the hair that is already growing when you have laser hair removal?
It is natural for some hair to continue to grow after BBL hair removal treatment. Some of these follicles are being purged from the recently treated areas. Others are dormant, meaning they were not in the active phase at the time of the BBL hair removal treatment. This is the reason why periodic sessions are necessary. 6 to 8 treatments are recommended every 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Q: How many hair removal treatments will I need?
Hair grown cyclically and only the ones in the active growth cycle are affected during the BBL or laser hair removal treatments. This is the reason why 6-8 BBL hair removal treatments are necessary to achieve satisfactory results. Depending on each patient’s skin type and on the texture of the hair being treated, more treatments may be needed at times. At My Petite Medispa we provide 15% discount on packages if 6 or more hair removal treatments.

Q: What happens during a BBL hair removal treatment? How long does the treatment take?
A: A review of medical history including any medications you may be taking along with any known allergies is made by the technician. Sun and tanning exposure is taken into consideration prior to proceeding with the laser hair removal treatment. Depending on the area being treated, a topical numbing agent may be applied to the bare skin.

The technician will then shave the area to be treated, if it has not been shaved already. He/she will then apply a cool, conducting gel in order to cool the area and to optimize skin contact with the treatment area. The area is then treated by the technician. He /she  will check sensitivity while adjusting settings if necessary.

BBL hair removal is that simple and easy. It’s precise technology along with it’s constant cooling makes this treatment far more comfortable than traditional laser hair removal treatments.

Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: Small areas such as the lip and chin may take 5 minutes, while larger areas such as the back or legs may take up to 30-45 minutes. With a 15 by 45mm spot size and rapid repetition, the treatment is far quicker than traditional laser hair removal.

Naturally, larger areas take much longer. However, no mater what area is being treated, BBL offers a much more efficient way that any other treatment. The precision is also crucial with the BBL hair removal advanced treatment.

BBL Hair removal offers an even safer, and more precise permanent hair removal means. The cooling feature is effective and works to minimize any possible discomfort associated with permanent hair removal.

Q: Is the procedure painful?
The degree of discomfort varies from person to person and area to area. The bikini area is generally more sensitive. The more robust the hair follicle, the greater the sensitivity. The sensation with laser hair removal treatment is that of a snapping or pin pricks along with warmth to the area. Most patients find the procedure tolerable, but not pain free. Treatments are customized, as the settings are adjustable to each individual’s tolerance level. BBL hair removal is by far less painful than traditional laser hair removal.

For the more sensitive body parts, some of our patients opt for a topical analgesic, which mellows any sensation associated with BBL hair removal. Therefore, making the treatment far more tolerable than traditional laser hair removal and electrolysis.

Q: What medications and topical applications to avoid prior to the laser hair reduction treatment?
A: In general St. John’s Wort and antibiotics tend to contribute to skin sensitivity. Those would best be avoided. The use of skin care products with Retin-A, Differin, Renova, glycolic or alpha-hydroxy acid preparations will also add to skin sensitivity. It is also important to that  nowadays most skin care lines do have a small percentage of alpha hydroxy’s. These must be discontinued at least several weeks prior to the BBL or laser hair removal treatment.

Q: Is the BBL hair reduction treatment recommended for pregnant women?
A: There have been studies with respect to pregnancy, however, we do not recommend BBL, IPL or laser hair removal be performed on pregnant women.

A: Significant change is visible, however, due to the fact that hair grows in stages, a more impactful result is seen after 3 treatments. Expect greater results following  6 to 8 treatments. The hair in active growth stages at the time of treatment is being destroyed at any given stage at a rate of 30%. Additional treatments are needed cyclically until all areas are affective

Q: Does BBL hair removal affect untreated areas?

Q: Does laser hair removal affect tattoos?
A: Yes, hair removal will affect tattoos  and may cause them to fade.

Q: How does know laser hair removal is effective?
A: Hair will lessen in density between sessions. As you approach your next session you should notice the dormant hair regrow. Remember, only the hair in the active growth stage will be affected by each treatment. That generally represents 30% of the hair each treatment round. Patients with coarser hair will experience slight edema or swelling. That is a clear indication that the treatment has been administered properly and is indeed working.

Q: How far apart should each laser hair removal sessions be scheduled?
A: Sessions are generally scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. This may however vary with body parts. The designated technician will determine the session frequency during the initial consultation.

Q: Is sun bathing a contra-indication during the laser hair removal process?
A: Sunbathing before, during and right after the treatments are to be avoided at all costs. The device looks for pigment and the greater the skin/hair pigment contrast, the more effective the treatment is. This makes it easier for the device to target unwanted hair.

Q: Is shaving the area to be treated recommended prior tp the consultation?
A: The area is best unshaved, so the technician is able to see the hair, in order to assess the color, texture and density. Once the technician determines you are a candidate, you may shave prior to the actual treatment. The hair follicle must be present, therefore waxing and tweezing is contraindicated. Bleaching is also a contraindication as it voids the follicle of pigment. This renders the treatment ineffective.

Q: Is leaving stubble recommended prior to the treatment?
A: Stubble the thickness of your finger nail is recommended. This makes it easier for the device to locate the follicle. However, not more than that small bit is recommended for the treatment purpose.

Q: Is it ok to shave after the BBL hair removal treatment?
A: Shaving the area is ok 3 day following the the treatment. Plucking, tweezing or exfoliating the area must be avoided. Edema or slight swelling may occur and shaving and exfoliating may further irritate the already swollen area.

Q: What are common side effects with laser hair removal?
A: One common side effect is redness and irritation to the site. The skin may appear slightly raised, like that of chicken bumps. These side effects do subside fairly quick, within hours or so. For those with a history of cold sores, these may resurface after the treatment. We recommend informing your technician. An anti-viral agent such as Acyclovir is recommended to prevent break outs.

Q: Is intense redness common after the laser hair removal treatment?
A: Peri-follicular edema is very common, as is redness following the laser hair removal treatment. This may as intense as the hair thickness. It may last for a few hours and it is a sign the treatment is effective.

Q: Can hives surface after the laser hair removal treatment?
A: Urticaria may  develop following the treatment and a cold compress will relieve it. Raised bumps that are itchy may also develop. Hot baths, saunas, showers, intense physical activity, outdoor type activities such as gardening, along with steam rooms must be avoided. These activities tend to worsen the above mentioned side effects.

Q: Does laser hair removal or BBL hair removal work on patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?
A: It is recommended that women who suffer from hirsutism, follow up with their primary care physician. Seeking treatment to balance out their hormones first is the best course of action. BBL hair removal has shown great success in reducing unwanted hair for such patients, however.

Q: Can laser hair removal cause cancer?
A: There has been no such findings or correlation between this treatment and cancer development.
