Weight loss assessment is such a complex topic, just as complex and our individuality. Recent studies refute the idea that diet and exercise are the answer to weight loss. Leptin is a hormone that regulates our brain, telling it weather we have enough fat stored in case of urgent starvation. Besides this, the new kid on the block, is responsible for other functions, such as: fertility, immunity, brain functions and others.

Leptin is the key hormone regulation our body energy balance with respect to how much we eat and how much fat our bodies need to store.

a hormone that regulates the calories we eat and burn, as well as how much fat we carry on our bodies. Leptin is produced in the fat cells. This knowledge is key in the game of weigh loss assessment.

Leptin is suppose to tell the brain that we don’t need to eat

Leptin is stored in fat cells and it is carried by the blood to the brain, in the hypothalamus, telling us how much to eat. Low levels of leptin tells the brain our body needs to store more fat, thus signaling a sense of hunger.

The mechanics at work is a negative feedback, and it is how many other systems in our bodies function.

Leptin resistance leads the body storing more fat

When there is a leptin resistance the brain is unaware that it has enough fat stored and it stores some more. This leads to obesity. This can be the case for instance with problems in nerve transmission caused by neurotoxins, to give a good example.

As a result, the brain signals the body to eat more or spend less energy, which results in overeating or laziness. Willpower in this case is rendered powerless.

Thus… Losing weight causes the brain to send signals to gain more, resulting in eating more and gaining the fat back, and this is important to consider when conducting a weight loss assessment

When we loose weight we loose fat and with that leptin. As the leptin levels decrease our body responds by gaining it back.

Known causes of Leptin resistance

Inflammation: both in animals and humans inflammation causes leptin resistance.
Free Fatty Acids: elevated levels of free fatty acids increases fat metabolites, resulting in leptin resistance
The presence of high leptin: too much leptin has been found to cause leptin resistance

Reversing Leptin resistance:

The simplest means of knowing you have a leptin resistance is by looking in the mirror. A lot of fat surrounding the belly area is an almost sure indication.

The best way to reduce the issue is by reducing inflammation inducing foods.


  • avoiding processed foods
  • eating more fiber
  • exercising
  • getting plenty of sleep
  • reducing carbohydrate intake
  • eating more protein
